It’s the oldest parade in Central Illinois, and it has an interesting history. It began in 1970. Leaders of Cub Scout Pack 11 were looking for a patriotic celebration for the scouts and their families. They couldn’t find anything, so they created their own.
The first parade was the scouts of Pack and Troop 11, their leaders and families. They followed a convertible and a sheriff’s car. The parade went from the firehouse to Sterling, then up to Calendar over to United Disciples Christian Church for the flag raising ceremony, which happens to be the largest flag raising ceremony in Central Illinois.
The West Peoria Lions Club now puts it on. The Parade route has changed. It now ends at Franciscan Recreation Complex for the flag raising ceremony.
The parade starts on 10am on Saturday. Jim and I will have lots of delicious candy. Look for the NASH FM 97.3 van!!! And Happy 4th Of July!!!
