If you got hooked on This is Us this season like I did, you probably have cried a bit… or a lot…. And have most likely made statements on your socials like “Damn you, This is Us!” and “Why do I subject myself to this??” It really is the new Parenthood, and I say that as someone who did not watch Parenthood when it was on, and just saw the social media reactions. I have NOW seen Parenthood and… yep, it’s the same emotionally charged type of show.
If you’re not a viewer, the short story is that the show revolves around a set of triplets and their parents, one of the triplets being adopted because the day the triplets were born, one did not survive, and the third in the “Big Three” was left at the hospital the same day. It follows the lives of Kate, Kevin, and Randall as adults, but follows Jack and Rebecca at a similar point in their lives, when the children were young. There are themes of love and acceptance regardless of size, never feeling like you’re good enough, regardless of your accomplishments, and trying to pack too much onto your plate and dealing with stress and anxiety. And of course, no sob-fest of a show would be complete without twists and turns of their love lives, their family life, why in present day Rebecca is married to Jack’s best friend (DRAMA), and birth parents. Everyone needs a good cry now and then, so I recommend you watch this show.
If you ARE a viewier… then, the cast has a message for you.
