“Stars Behind Bars” MDA Lock-Up Thursday, March 18, 2010
Prominent Pekin area citizens are being accused of “having a big heart for Jerry’s Kids.” They are volunteering to be “arrested and serve time” in a mock jail at Avanti’s Restaurant on Thursday, March 18th, in an effort to raise money for the local Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The “Stars Behind Bars” themed Lock-Up is a premier annual social event dedicated to raising money to support the local children and adults in the Pekin area living with neuromuscular diseases. All funds raised stay within Tazewell County, so participants and contributors will directly help hundreds of local community members. At the MDA Lock-Up participants will be sentenced to “raise bail” by calling friends and encouraging contributions to advance MDA’s lifesaving programs. Several local businesses are supporting the community event. Jailbirds will enjoy networking with other business leaders while helping the local community. All of the participants are going to experience jail “MDA style”; there will be no bread and water here! Anyone interested in participating in this MDA Lock-Up or in nominating someone to participate can contact the local MDA office at 217-351-1853. MDA is a voluntary health agency supporting programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, advocacy, and professional and public health education for muscular dystrophy and related diseases.

On March 20, 2010, Senator Dave Koehler, Representative Jehan Gordon and Mayor Jim Ardis will host their second Community Call To Action forum and workshop aimed at addressing quality of life issues in our community. The forum will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon, at the Dream Center, 714 Hamilton Boulevard. The goal of the second forum will be to focus on youth issues, identify problems that impact our quality of life, and brainstorm about possible solutions. We will also be identifying an area of the city to serve as a community project. We are inviting the community to serve as knowledgeable resources in your respective fields at this event. In addition to generating new ideas, we hope that this Community Call to Action will institute a renewed effort on behalf of Peoria citizens and community leaders alike to make positive interventions in the lives of our young people.
